Eyewitnesses at Maxton and Red Springs on April 22nd say they saw no lamp black on the defendant’s face nor mud on his shoes, contrary to prior allegations. Other observers corroborated the Maxton sighting that day.
The New York weekly bank statement shows surplus reserve income at 3,870,600 and loans income 5,400. Specie increases by 38,944,600 while legal tenders rise 1,286,600 and deposits grow 540,240. Circulation income adds 38,400.

A violent storm and cyclone struck Washington by 12:30 PM causing extensive damage across F and 12th streets. Four story construction collapsed injuring workers, a tailor named Mr White died, gas facilities burned, and the White House features were damaged. Alexandria and Baltimore also report unroofed houses, downed gas lines, and flooded streets.
At Guoteester N J first race 6 furlongs Kanes ville won with Lady M second. Other races list Ted Gegg, Sequel and India Rubber winners with several seconds and thirds. At Caicaco mile races note Gunshot Glenoid Neva C and Atticus Eugenie winners with times. Fausta the yearling filly set a world record on Stockton track with 2 254 for a mile driven by Sanders, after a 2 40 showing last Tuesday.
Mr Clarence Bennett presented Monte Cristo to a light house audience in his first local appearance. His company features special scenery and was greeted by a curtain call. Tonight they perform The Royal Slave with Mexico set scenes and praised life like scenery and handsome costumes.
The Board of Aldermen met in special session with Mayor Badger presiding to honor Alder man Walter R Womble. A five member committee Stronach House Lee Bowes Lewis was formed to draft resolutions. The board will attend the funeral in a body and order the engine house draped in mourning for thirty days.
London reports Rio de Janeiro in open revolt against Marshal da Fonseca with the populace demanding his overthrow. A later dispatch says Fonseca resigned in favor of Floriano Peixotto as vessels from Santos indicate strong hints of brewing government upheaval in Brazil.
Walter R. Womble, a respected Raleigh alderman from the second ward, died yesterday after several weeks of illness. He was 44 and one of twelve Jordan Womble children, noted for honesty and civic service. Funeral arrangements to be announced.
The longtime Wake County Democratic executive committee chairman was praised for guiding a sweeping victory and for his active role as chairman of the fire committee of the Raleigh Board of Aldermen. The Walter R. Womble Hook and Ladder Company was named in his honor. He never married and lived at the Womble homestead on Hargett Street with his single brothers until his death. Surviving relatives include seven brothers W T Womble L D Womble O G Womble and Frank Womble of Raleigh Jas Womble of Norfolk VA and Jas T Womble of Durham and Jordan Womble of Purnell and one sister Mrs Sarah Royster of Raleigh.
John Briggs ten and Carl Stone twelve pupils of Miss Welch were injured when a decayed tree fell in the Oakdale lot behind Briggs residence during recess. John suffered severe scalp wounds and facial injuries with unconsciousness. Carl had facial cuts and a scalp wound. Both remained unconscious at 5 PM.
