Trial hears testimony on McDougald case at crowded court

The packed court heard witnesses on the McDougald murder case. D Shaw Sr of Rockingham testified to trial progress while other witnesses described sightings near Maxton and Shandon. Reverend Lynch and Miss McKay added details of the day of Connelly’s death as proceedings adjourned.

Presbyterian Orphanage Burned at Barnum Springs

Special to State Chronicle Barnum Springs Presbyterian Orphanage burned to the ground this afternoon. No lives lost. Forty children will be cared for locally. A wire to Dr Rumple pledges a free rebuilding site and bricks at four dollars per thousand with liberal local contributions.

Frank Almy Convicted of Murder in New Hampshire

Plymouth, N H November 19 The trial of Frank Almy for the murder of Christie Warden ended today with a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree. He was sentenced to be hanged the first Tuesday in December 1892 after a long statutory delay. Almy had been moved to the State prison at Concord and was not present when sentence was pronounced.

Pork duty approved by Chamber on American pork

The Chamber of Deputies today approved a duty of 24 francs per 200 pounds on American pork as proposed by the senate committees. The measure targets imports from the United States amid wartime trade controls.

John Brown's Fort Demolished for World's Fair Relocation

Workmen tear down John Brown's fort at Harpers Ferry. A Chicago stock company reportedly bought the fort and its contents to ship to Chicago for reconstruction at the World’s Fair. The purchase price per brick was stated as far above any reasonable value.

Trustees meeting in Goldsboro during the convention unanimously pick Raleigh as the location for the Baptist State female university. A committee led by N. B. The Cotton Market Weekly Receipts and Prices

The week ending yesterday afternoon saw receipts of 1335 bales, down from 1879 a year ago. From Sept 1 to date, receipts were 12991 versus 22489 last season. Shipments totaled 1432 with 1034 on the platform. Middling cotton closed yesterday at 7 5 8 cents.
