Alarm in Tennessee as capital balks state entry

Nashville reports a rising crisis with East Tennessee miners and rivals from Kentucky Alabama and Virginia. Two Swindlers Captured After Counterfeit Ruse

John Moriarty, a local youth, was duped Saturday night by two men, W. C. Woodlief and Hubert Warren, who posed as detectives and seized his $1.45 counterfeit money. They promised release until Monday and wired a bond, but Moriarty alerted police. The swindlers were arrested near the Bowery and jailed after failing to post $200 bonds each for the January term of Superior Court. Woodlief and Warren, carpenters by trade, face justice as Moriarty wins a narrow victory over deceit.

Counterfeiters Nabbed in Silver Dollar Plot

Saturday morning Jesse Goodwin white was arrested for passing counterfeit silver dollars. He implicated J W Dezern a carpenter from Carnleigh and John Allen Johnson a former US inmate. Dezern and Johnson were captured nearby. forged coins traced to a ramshackle smithy in Rhamkattte. Powdered glass found to imitate metal finish. Goodwin bought tobacco with the bogus money and received real coin in change. All held for hearing before U S Commissioner Purnell. bail default sent to jail.

Big row at Charlotte over Jones Forepaugh interview

A Friday evening clash erupted after Forepaugh's show when Sam Jones disputed a reporter story about his circus visit. Jones clashed with Jim Cook and other press men, injuring several reporters and sending others fleeing through a window and coal hole. Forepaugh remained uninjured, while Uncle Jones preached later that night.
