Defense rests after calling witnesses as the Motz murder trial continues with testimony about the shooting of Sam Motz. Witnesses describe gunfire, a buggy chase, and statements by Michael and others as legal arguments resume before adjournment.
Northbound freight on the Richmond and Danville railroad collided with coal cars on an iron bridge over the river. Engine and four cars fell into the water. Conductor J. E. Royall and brakeman Will Quizenberry were injured. Quizenberry later died. O. C. McKinnie was injured. others reported as doing well. Knights Templar announce parade for Oxford Orphan Asylum benefit on November 18 with Masons expected from across the state.

In Knoxville area on November 2, a band of armed men liberated about 300 convicts at Oliver Springs and set the stockade afire. Many inmates were supplied citizen clothes, and guards offered no resistance. Officials fear further escapes as miners plan to free others at Tracy City. Governor Buchanan departed for Nashville amid speculation. Ten Briceville and Coal Creek convicts were jailed nearby.
J H Redding of Ashboro was robbed in Winston Saturday night losing a pocket book with $40, a 140 note and a $50 check after his pocket was cut. He suspects pick-pockets. J M Pendleton repaid $100 of stolen funds, total remittance reaches $250.

The court heard State v French and Sons and State v Stevenson from Wilmington. Defense argued tax on out of state purchases regulates interstate commerce and double taxation concerns. Prosecution maintained tax applies. the two cases involve about 30 000 dollars annually.
Re ports show sixth district appeals disposed and seventh district calls listed for Monday. Cases include State v French and State v Stevenson with representation by the Attorney General and defense counsel. Letters from Atlantic Electropoise Co. endorse the device for various ailments.

A $200 reward is posted for Henry Jones alleged to have murdered Mr. Ransom RE Gill in Franklin County last year. Jones was reportedly under arrest in Louisiana but escaped. A South Carolina governor requisitioned Charles Christopher, burglary arson suspect, now in Asheville. Governor Jackson of Maryland is asked to extradite William P. Brosins for embezzling 19 watches from M. A. Teller & Co. valued at $1,000. A dual character naval artillery battalion at Charlotte reports mixed War and Navy support and lists officers. A new Gatling gun model is announced for the battalion.
