Debated tariff politics as Senate clash with House

In Washington June 28 the Senate heard Hale assert the Democratic platform favors protection with a view to free trade and revenue tariffs. West defended the party line citing tin plate, trusts, and Armour. House proceedings covered pension bills for Civil War nurses, Army and Navy commission rules, and a weather bulletin. in Charlotte the Democrats ratified Chicago nominees as New Orleans moves to ban lotteries after 1895.

Republicans Meet in New York Reorganizes State Committee

The New York Republican Committee met for reorganization. William Brookfield was re elected chairman and Charles W. Hackett of Utica became executive chairman replacing the ailing Gen. James W. Husted. The session signals continued control of the party by Mr Platt. The report covers other states and political notes from Indiana Ohio and England.

Richmond Terminal group adjourns without action on reorganization

The Richmond Terminal committee met at Work Strong & Co in New York and adjourned to July 7 without decisions. Drexel Morgan & Co declined to undertake the reorganization, citing the need for equity and protection against single interests amid pending litigation and a Danville receiver. Clyde questioned loyalty of some parties and emphasized protecting the property from delays and external pressures.

Races at Washington Park and other tracks June events
