In Washington on May 31 the Senate discussed the post office appropriation and free delivery. Alumni and visitors filled the State University for Alumni Day with a trustees meeting and an alumni association address by Charles D. Melver. The day featured a decennial reunion of the class of 1882 and an oration by Hon. Alfred M. Waddell on Col. William L. Saunders. Evening program included Dialectic and Philanthropic society orations with speakers S. F. Austin, T. J. Cooper, F. C. Harding, E. P. Eller, and P. Wooten. An oil portrait of Charles M. Stedman was presented. Gov. Holt was absent due to illness. Commencement follows tomorrow with seven of sixteen graduates delivering orations.
The Peace Institute last evening staged a long well attended concert under Prof. Baumann and instructors. Performances included six piano renditions of Freischutz and Midsummer Night's Dream, vocal solos by Emma Watkins Bettie Watkins and Bonnie Oates, and a finale by a double quartet. The Cyclone club attended in force, with about thirty members in full dress and badges.
A protest from the planters' association against Cuba's new sugar and tobacco duties returns to Madrid, with representatives abroad set to inform the government that Cuba cannot meet the levies while developing wealth and resources. The association gains sympathy from producers and both parties on the island.
