A devastating excursion train collision near Sainte Maude leaves hundreds dead or injured. Rescue efforts failed to reach many as flames and drowning hazards compounded the disaster, with charred bodies displayed at the town hall as survivors recount harrowing scenes.
A brief item from Lospex dated July 27 notes Rev. Chas H Spur is making progress toward recovery. A reader from Augusta Ark. cites Bradycrotine as reliably curing headaches with no adverse effects and endorses its use.
Special Cor. State Chronicle notes immense beds of iron copper and gold beneath surface debris in Randolph County. A new Redding gold mine near Cedar Falls shows promising samples including a nineteen pennyweight specimen, with potential to raise regional real estate values as development continues. Mr W W Redding of Randleman, a stockholder, invites inspection of the samples.

Mulberry church was reported destroyed by lightning. Letters from patients praising P P P were published but later halted after manufacturers complained. P P P is claimed to cure several illnesses.
Educator advertises sale of Bingham School assets after relocation to Asheville. The property sits on the Richmond and Danville line about fifty miles from the state capital and includes barracks, recitation rooms, a mess hall, residences, baths, orchard, lawn, and 380 acres of land. Over $30,000 has been invested in improvements. Mrs We Bincham invites applications for details and purchase terms.

Lawmakers vow firm action as oyster dredging is banned. Companies allegedly buy up entries to circumvent the ten-acre limit, drawing protests from oystermen. Oyster Commissioner Lucas and Gov. Holt agree to instruct the Attorney General to oust improper entries and enforce the law.

Samuel J Harris of New York reports relief from a months long head cold after one week of using Ely's Cream Balm. He calls it the best remedy known and recommends its use.
North Carolina mourns Willie Bingham a popular cadet at Bingham School who died of typhoid fever at age 15. He had just completed his course with honors and spent a year at the State University. The Ormentese extends deepest sympathy to the bereaved. London note reports Manchester Chamber of Commerce sees poor trade amid South American woes and cheap cotton.
Miss Margaretta Arlina Hamm, nineteen, files a defamation action for $10,000 against the Boston Herald alleging a news interview with Secretary Blaine led to an attack and names Mrs Gorse as the jealous party responsible.
At St Peters' burg on July 27 Grand Duke Alexis hosted a dinner aboard the Russian flagship Asia for officers visiting the French squadron. The visit fostered cordial relations with mutual goodwill. The Czar and President Carnot exchanged extremely friendly telegrams signaling closer Franco Russian cooperation.
Winston North Carolina routed Spartanburg 21 to 2 in a preseason game here. The win sets up Winston to face Columbia next, with a return trip to Charleston scheduled for Thursday.

The North Carolina Teachers Assembly names its 1891 92 Executive Committee with Hugh Morson as chairman and E G Harrell as secretary. The ninth annual session runs June 21 to July 4 1892, with site to be chosen by the committee from coastal and mountain proposals, likely westward.
Dr Selry V Wilson former head of the Wood’s Hall Fish Station in Massachusetts was elected professor of biology at the University. A Johns Hopkins AB and PhD graduate and Baltimore native, he is noted for marine research, fish hatching work, and teaching. He will serve as Assistant Shell Commissioner to the North Carolina Fish Commission and as scientific expert for the commission. His Johns Hopkins and U S Fish Commission endorsements back his appointment.
