Major H K Dudley warns of possible bloodshed as miners and militia clash over convict labor in Coal Creek Tennessee. Governor Buchanan orders troops to enforce law while public sentiment turns against convict labor in mines amid rising tensions and threats of siege.
In Parliament a 60 000 pound bill funds salaries and expenses for Ireland relief measures. Balfour defends relief works as a permanent welfare program across Ireland while Healy and Webb praise efforts yet condemn the system. Balfour supports an agricultural department and aid to the Irish Land Commission.
The advertisement claims P. P. P. stimulates appetite assists digestion cures nervous troubles and strengthens all organs. It asserts lasting permanent effects and that nervous prostration is cured by the great powerful remedy.
Ronville Tennessee July 22 Police and state officials including Gov Pick Attorney General Pick Adjutant General Norman Supt of Prisons Wade and Labor Commissioner Ford and Sheriff Rutherford plan a conference this afternoon to decide if troops are legally called out and if they should be sent to the mines or sent home. Rutherford denies fleeing and says the Governor should share responsibility.
A July mass meeting in Little Rock denounces Tennessee convict troubles and the penitentiary lessee contracts including the insane asylum project. Resolutions call for immediate nullification and threats are raised against using Winchester rifles to block convict labor, with more meetings announced.
Assistant Secretary Spaulding issues a circular to customs officers declaring lottery tickets subject to duty as printed matter under the 1890 tariff. Mail importation is prohibited by the Universal Postal Union Convention, and lottery tickets and related printed advertisements should be held as forfeited goods.
Londoon July 22 reports doctors in attendance upon the Rev. Chas. H. Spurgeon say he today shows signs of improvement. The notice reflects cautious optimism about his recovery and the ongoing medical care.
