Winston Daily and Western Sentinel Sold for Ten Thousand

J O Foy, founder of the Yin City Daily and owner of the Western Sentinel, sold the entire newspaper plant today in Winston to W F Burbank of New York City for ten thousand dollars. The sale follows six years of energetic leadership by Foy who started with no capital or experience. The paper debuts in new dress and adopts afternoon United Press service.

Carnegie Mills Open Without Key Mechanics Report

At Homestead Pennsylvania on July 18 workers notified to report for duty did not appear. Only watchmen and foremen, loyal to Carnegie, entered. No skilled mechanics showed, leaving mills shut and awaiting ready crews as Amalgamated strike ties up work. In Pittsburgh managers expect to start when replacements arrive, but labor mass remains united.

Train No 27 Washout Kills Two Near Florence

A Northeast railroad wreck five miles south of Florence on July 17 killed J S Cinamon and William Moore and injured two others. After a two hour delay passengers were moved. coroner’s jury ruled deaths due to an unavoidable washout on the Northeastern railroad.

Murder charges stoke Homestead strike turmoil

Warrants issued in Pittsburg charge leaders of the Homestead strike with murder. Hugh ODonnell and seven others sought as a vanguard of a broader force. Troops and sheriffs move to seize leaders as townsfolk react with fear, tears, and calls for calm amid looming arrests.

In Burlington Holt’s Opera House a large Burlington Alamance county ratification meeting formed a temporary club with Dr. R A Freeman as chairman and W H Carroll as secretary. About 100 men signed the roll as Dr S A Freeman was elected president and E S Parker Jr secretary. A Graham organizing meeting is set for next Saturday night.
