The Senate held a sparse session with Mr Stanford’s land loan bill debated briefly before adjournment. The La Abra case loomed, while Peffer and Stanford pressed similar economic proposals. In the House, portraits of ex Speakers Galusha and Randall were presented and accepted amid a light audience.
The House rules committee in Washington adopted the Fiftieth Congress code with minor changes from the prior Democratic era. It reintroduces a Holman rule rider limit, expands privileges for rules committee reports, and tightens time on suspending the rules to one hour for bill introduction.
United Press reports Judge Advocate Remey's full testimony on the Valparaiso Baltimore sailors assault. Sailors described brutality by Chilean citizens and some Chilean troops firing on Riggin. Dr Still testified Turnbull stabbed and treated delays led to death. Turnbull died two days after hospital care. Chilean officials seek amicable U S settlement. Chilean ships practice cruise for recruits.
Stockholders met January 19 1892 in Durham North Carolina to review the president's yearly report showing 1891 business was satisfactory. Directors elected for 1892 include Jno A McDowell Samuel H Austin Jr J S Carr and M E McDowell. Officers named J S Carr president S H Austin Jr vice president John A McDowell treasurer J M Duncan secretary. The firm reports large contracts for 1892 creating an optimistic outlook.
Washington Duke offers to raise his Trinity College pledge from eighty five thousand to one hundred thousand in cash plus twenty thousand in property. He also enables a fifty thousand endowment from the North Carolina Methodist church and funds for main building equipment. The offer, accepted by the board, totals 120000 dollars and is described as the largest education donation by a Southern man since the war.
A destructive fire in Norfolk Virginia at 2 am hit the cotton district damaging buildings occupied by Jones Lee Co J B Harrell Co Harrell Bros and the American Peanut Co at the foot of Commerce Street The loss is estimated at 60000 with about 49000 insured.
The Democratic National Committee met at the Arlington Hotel in Washington to select a time and place for the next convention. After executive sessions and multiple ballots among cities including Cincinnati Detroit Indianapolis Kansas City Milwaukee New York San Francisco and St Paul Chicago secured the 27 votes on the 15th ballot and will host the convention.
The State Democratic Executive Committee, chaired by Smith, is called to meet in Raleigh on Wednesday March 2 1892 at 11 o'clock a.m. to set a date and location, issue the call for a State Convention, and handle other business as needed. Members are urged to attend due to the importance of the meeting.
Lenoir Male Academy in Lenoir North Carolina has reopened after a Christmas suspension. The military feature annexed is advancing, with only a few places left for new pupils. Principal E L Barnes and his assistants are praised for excellent progress.
ANNAPOLIS Md Jan 71 Hon Charles H Gibson was elected United States Senator by the Maryland general assembly joint convention to fill an unexpired five year term replacing E K Wilson.
In a letter to Speaker Crisp Representative Mills of Texas resigns as chair of the Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee. He says he prefers no chairmanship this Congress to work on the floor but adds the real reason is his Texas Senate bid. The resignation shifts the chair to reduce Mills’ time in the House during the canvass as Wise of Virginia is appointed to the committee chair.
The executive committee of the North Carolina Sunday School Association issues its eleventh annual State convention call to be held in Newbern March 29 30 31 with leaders Wm Reynolds of Peoria and H M Hamill of Illinois, urging county by county representation and urging all counties to hold conventions. Special train plans and reduced rail fares are noted, with preparations for an outline program and railroad details to follow.
