Major General Robert Ransom longtime North Carolina Confederate veteran and president of the State Association of Confederate Veterans died at New Bern from congestive illness related to grippe. He was 65, a famed West Point rider and former cavalry captain whose leadership at Wrightsville and the North Carolina Veterans Association reunion earned wide respect. The Soldier's Home flag is lowered in his memory.

Norfolk report says Yard master T. R. Taylor of the C and O died instantly while supervising two cars being chained after a broken coupling. He stood between the cars with a colored assistant when the vehicles backed together. Taylor’s chest was crushed and the assistant was seriously injured.
