United Press reports a mine accident at Mine Eleven trapping hundreds of workers. Five dead families gather at the mouth while rescuers pull fleeing survivors from the shaft. PM crowds and sirens signal the grim scene as authorities warn of more casualties.
Reports describe barns burned on the J. P. Evans farm near Greenville amid suspicions on local colored workers. After a siege and deputy arrests, masked men seized two prisoners, sparking fears of lynching before they were freed and later released after a preliminary hearing.
Miss Vint Woods returned from New York was assaulted by Mayor Higgins in a vacant house near the Somerset station after a late train from Cincinnati. He was arrested as a mob rumor spread and jailed after a brief court adjournment. Woods is crazed from fright and exposure. Higgins says little.
Senate privileges and elections committee opened hearings on contested Idaho and Florida seats with Clagett vs Dubois and Davidson vs Call. Foster delays southern trip. Blaine reviews documents. city considers electric lighting plant purchase and health department funding.
In Raleigh interview Capt J. 4 Cie tas says merchants would join farmers in a move to cut cotton acres. They favor farmers growing food at home and only enough cotton to cover expenses. Crop forecasts show 1559 was poor and this season much worse with fertilizer debts and a $600,900 shortfall in Raleigh versus last year.
Washington reports the State Alliance Presidents' Convention adopting a resolution favoring fraternal relations with labor organizations at the St Louis conference on February 22 1892 while avoiding commitment to any political party. Also notes a traveler’s claim about Cornish girls becoming strong after marriage.
United Press reports a cyclone hit Randolph and Chambers counties on Wednesday night. Five miles from Roanoke James Williams house collapsed during a dance killing three men and wounding five women. The storm damaged Milltown shops and the Baptist church, with Professor Gibson among the dead and twelve injured. Three enslaved cabins carried away near a mile marker, with three children killed. In total many were injured and the full toll remained uncertain.
A Wilmington Messenger report notes merchants allied to contest a local purchase tax. The fund subscribers endorsed the committee action and decided to seek review in the Supreme Court of the United States, despite unfavorable state court decisions.
In foreign lands Albertine Forgue a leading French stage actress dies at twenty four. A protege of the Conservatoire she debuted at the Odeon and later filled in for Sarah Bernhardt in Jeanne d Arc at the Porte & Martin. In Transylvania drought rites feature naked girls placing a harrow across a brook then burning small fires to summon rain.
Historian fondly recalls Governor Holt’s speeches. The author notes past canvassing in Alamance County in 1886 revealed Holt as a convincing speaker with no pretensions to oratory.
The Raleigh cotton mills reported a net surplus of over 8000 after expenses and improvements. A 4 percent dividend on 840000 capital stock was declared, with the remainder added to profit and loss. Since opening in 1890 the mill has bought 31.09 bales of cotton and spun 1.297 million pounds of hosiery yarns.
Letters from 54 Raleigh visitors describe a bravenly time in Cuba with Major Neathery's grandson Jebanie Harrell sending a warm blessing to the family. The group reports heat in Hatana and quick hotel arrival, notes diverse colors among locals, and a dreamlike impression of travel as if watching a panorama.
