Special to STATE CHRONICLE from Clafton Feb 8 says Rev J W Lee led a revival that progresses well with three sermons. A noon talk drew about 200 men, a dozen pledged family worship, 36 asked prayers, 15 mourners, and persistent prayer is urged as meetings run through Wednesday morning.

Indicted for Selling Cigarettes to Minors in Buncombe

Asheville Feb 8 The Buncombe Criminal Court grand jury returned seventy two true bills against parties who sold cigarettes to minors under the 1891 act. Most indicted parties submitted pleas. one person faced eight bills. Discontinuance of the night train on the Western North Carolina road drew notable dissatisfaction.

Death of Capt William Hazlehurst in Macon Georgia

News reaches us of the death of Capt William Hazlehurst aged 52 in Macon Georgia on January 19 He served as aide to Gen Ambrose Wright in the Confederate service rising to captain He worked in Savannah and Macon then as manager for the Life Insurance Company in Raleigh before retiring due to illness from grippe He leaves many friends in Raleigh and Georgia who mourn his passing.

Fire Rips Hotel Royal in New York Blaze Kills and Maims Many

Fire in the basement of the five story Hotel Royal at Sixth Avenue and Fortieth Street near 3 am traps guests and staff. About 150 guests and 55 employees were inside. at least five dead, six in hospitals, many burned or crushed as walls collapse. Loss estimated at 250000 with numerous rescues underway. Two reported fatalities from window jumps and several injuries. infant and adult deaths noted in follow up notices with funeral plans announced.
