Murdered tax collector robbed at Panther Creek

Dec 17 Greenville dispatch reports Butler county tax collector E. J. Armstrong was shot on Panther Creek bridge fourteen miles west of Greenville. A fight left him dead and robbed of 1200 dollars, a gold watch, and a pistol. An armed posse of thirty searched the area as two witnesses described two assailants with dark faces. Armstrong, a one legged Confederate veteran, leaves a widow and three children.
