House of Representatives Elects Crisp Speaker in 1893 Session

The House convened with Crisp elected Speaker by a large majority amid cheers and ceremonial duties. Officers Kerr Yoder Warner Curigus Milburn chosen. Chaplain Milburn led prayer as members were sworn in. Adjournment followed as committees prepared to notify the President and Senate.

Man Shoots Self at Newton Depot

Par nell Elliott of Hickory working at the new depot here killed himself at noon today. The report notes his suicide by shooting through the heart and adds no further details of motive or circumstance.

Second Sheriff to Settle Taxes in Full for Bladen County

W S Clark sheriff of Bladen county settled with the State Treasurer paying 4839 95 for the year 1891. He is noted as the second sheriff to settle in full under the law as of the first Monday in the month. An earlier report notes the Exposition caused electrical loads and a temporary suspension at the Electric Railway power house. Repair work began last night to substitute damaged equipment and restore service to cars hoped for this morning. The company expresses regret over the unavoidable halt.

Rough Hoax on Rabbi Rabinowitz

United Press reports a Baltimore rabbi, Rabbi R. S. Rabinowitz, fell for a hoax letter from a James Brown typewriter signer claiming to arrange infant naming services in Warsaw North Carolina. The forged check on the National Bank of Newbern failed while Rabinowitz faced repayment obligations after traveling to meet the supposed contact.

Fifth Regiment Visit to Raleigh Celebrated by Company D

Company D of the Fifth Regiment held a banquet at Whitaker's on South Eutaw Street Baltimore in appreciation of Raleigh experiences. Smith Bros sent ten kegs of beer to Baltimore to mark the visit. Capt Geo Cole and Lieut B Frank Boyden led 55 men and invited members while Company D Glee Club sang with Company C Orchestra.

McLean Wins Outrigged Boat Race Amid Crowds Bark

McLean won the out rigged boat race against Hanian in San Francisco yesterday with a time of 23 minutes 47 seconds. McLean held a hundred yard lead at the start as a large crowd jeered the contestants, crying foul and alleging the contest was a fake.

On December 8 in Washington D C the House chose Mr Crisp as Speaker after Hatch withdrew on the 23rd ballot and voted for Crisp. Springer and McMillin shifted loyalties shaping the final choice with Crisp winning by a narrow margin amid jubilant supporters and a loud, celebratory rally at the Crisp headquarters.

Terrific North Carolina Storm Destroys Homes and Lumber Sheds

A tornado-like storm moved from Edgecombe through upper Martin destroying Goose Neck gun house and Hitch's lumber sheds with large quantities of lumber. It unroofed houses and felled trees as the 50 yard wide main track moved eastward. A man prayed as his house shook. locals note a similar storm fifty years ago.

Jury verdict set aside in Shaffer v Edwards & Broughton

In the U S Circuit Court yesterday the case over Shaffer’s map of Raleigh ended with a verdict for the defendants. Judge Seymour set aside the verdict and the case will return at the next term. Attorneys argued copyright questions and removal issues in related State cases.
