The North Carolina Methodist Conference details district presiding elders reports. It lists local preachers 143 and members 55,638 with 543 church edifices valued at 704,744.41 and 92 parsonages worth 114,355. Sunday schools total 584 with 4,305 teachers and 35,255 scholars. Money raised for all causes 207,031.31 including foreign missions 138,415.19 after a year of stringency.
A Tennessee meeting at the Governor's office decides to hire 100 guards for Briceville and 100 for Coal Creek. Officials plan a militia guard of 75 at each stockade as convicts are moved into the sites despite opposition. state costs reach $9,699.
An ex Senator close to President Harrison says Blaine will announce this week that he is not a candidate for the Republican nomination. The source notes Blaine’s admiration for Harrison and predicts the president’s nomination.

In Birmingham on December 1 Bud Talley and Bob Newborne prominent Blount county farmers were jailed at Oneita charged with the murder of Stephen Cates a neighbor. An old grudge fueled the shooting just after midnight as Cates was killed and two men were seen fleeing. Talley had borrowed a rifle earlier that day and planned to confront Cates with Newborne. Lynching threats follow the fatal incident.
