Morson and Denson, principals, with L. Haswood as assistant, begin the year on Monday August. Pupils are urged to enroll for business life training with catalogues available by addressing the principals. The previous year was noted as successful in its song program.
The 42nd annual session opens in August at ORD Female Seminar Oxford. The program offers degrees B A and G E, with graduate English and business courses including typewriting. Faculty hold diplomas from leading institutions such as University of Virginia Lamour of Languages Cooper Union and Berlin Royal Conservatory. 40 week courses cover culture and free hand drawing at a price of 170 dollars.

News from Coal Creek reports Gen. Anderson holding Fort Anderson against 3 000 to 5 000 miners. Knoxville guards and militia move in while townsfolk rush rifle ammo to the scene. Reports conflict as wires fail and a possible lynching looms. In Knoxville a 600 strong National Guard unit arrives from Chattanooga.
Campaign tensions surge as Governor Tillman denounces rival speaker Youmans calling him a blackguard. A melee erupts with bruises but no serious injuries, signaling deep partisan strife ahead of August 30 primaries.
Special to the State Chronicle from Tanpore North Carolina on August 18 reports the Republican county convention, made up entirely of Negro members, endured eight hours of turbulence as the chairman was deposed. The convention split into two factions, each naming a ticket, with no reconciliation possible.
The Democratic National Committee set up a western sub committee to open branch headquarters in Chicago to direct campaign work in Illinois Wisconsin Michigan Minnesota Iowa North and South Dakota. Don M Dickinson will head the effort with B T Cable and E C Wall as aides. Sen Gorman of Maryland is ill but consulted.
In Houston Texas the Hogg faction convention adopted the majority platform calling for free coinage of silver, income tax, and railways commission support. Governor Hogg accepted the nomination after a 693 to 168 vote, while Bolter delegates left the hall. Separate state ticket finalized by the Clark convention. Baseball scores reported from major leagues. Notes on insurance suit, West Point appointments, and brief ads for Dr King’s New Discovery and Ayer’s Hair Vigor.
Maj. Moses A. Bledsoe addressed a large Democratic Club gathering praising the tariff and opposing the force bill. He argued the force bill would destroy liberty, urged black votes against it, and urged party unity. The meeting planned future events and noted a Stevenson reception. Gatesville report adds Eure for the house and renominates officers.
Senator Ransom spoke to about eight hundred voters in Durham on August 18, praising Democratic control in North Carolina for sixteen years and criticizing the third party platform. He warned against railroad and telegraph nationalization, cited the national debt, and urged support for the Democratic ticket amid strong, lingering campaign enthusiasm.
W A Guthrie the People's Party nominee for justice of the Supreme Court visited Greensboro on legal business and said he would wait for official notification before commenting on accepting the nomination. He is attorney for three railroads and accepting would require surrender of passes and demandable business. J B Eaves told reporters there will be a Republican ticket in the state with J E Boyd likely Greensboro nominee for governor and Democratic divisions aiding Republican prospects.
Tom Long, People's Party auditor candidate, and J B Eaves, both Republicans, parted at Greensboro depot in a sceneful moment. Long expressed farewell to old parties and hinted at a joint discussion to boycott Democrats and limit audience exposure.
A large farmer gathering at Bryant's Grove near Auburn hosted Marion Butler as president of the Farmers Alliance. Butler delivered a sharp third party anti railroads speech, dodged a question on party plank, and drew mixed cheers. The event featured several speakers including N B Broughton and Perrin Gower, ending as a strong straight Democratic gathering with ladies cheering.
