The State Democratic convention in Georgia elected W J Northen as governor and Phil Cooke, Wright, Hardeman, Nesbitt, and Terrell to key posts, while pledging an electoral ticket to Cleveland and Stevenson. A Republican convention was slated for the next day as tributes to public figures and notes on state politics fill the report.
A Finland coast collision between the Ajax and the Runeberg near Port Helsingfors caused massive loss of life. The Ajax sank swiftly, many Swedish Finns aboard, 86 missing and 39 bodies recovered. The Runeberg, damaged, aided rescue efforts and ferried survivors.

Company says many deserters are those discharged for cause and notes over 1,500 workers remain on site despite claims of hundreds evacuated. Cooks and waiters at Carnegie are on strike after head cook J A Ranborn’s dismissal.

Balloting began for officer positions with Butler re-elected president, Long as vice president, Dr. Cyrus Thompson named state lecturer, Barnes re-elected secretary and treasurer, and other old officers expected to be reelected amid strong third party talk and conservative opposition.
Epenton and Lumperton reports say Alexander was nominated for Congress in the Sixth District by acclamation with Sol. C. Weil chosen elector. The convention was largely attended, harmonious, and genuinely democratic in tone.
