A North Carolina man from Haw River drew a knife during a train depot crowd incident with John L Sullivan in Greensboro. Sullivan, intoxicated, threatened a knife fight before a police presence ended the altercation.
In St Louis last Tuesday Republicans used snap shot cameras at polls to record repeaters or suspected repeaters. A man recorded the voter's name and voting time when a suspect voted. If a confrontation arose a signal was sent and a camera record made. Several hundred photos are being developed and the originals may be prosecuted. The Choctaw troubles prompt dispatches from Washington calling for troops to prevent domestic strife and preserve peace.
A 14 day Pullman editor excursion leaves Desmorges Iowa with 160 editors bound for St Louis Nashville Chattanooga Atlanta Savannah Jacksonville Pensacola Mobile Louisville and New Orleans. Chaperoned by Lafe Young and Geo Harver. accompanying note mentions California earthquake shocks near Pico Canon in Southern California.
A delegation of forty editors from the Southern Afternoon Press Association, led by J. W. Burson and H. H. Cabaness, meet Secretary of the Interior Hoke Smith in Washington. Smith lauds Cleveland ties, urges reform in public expenditures, and editors plan further talks with the Southern Associated Press for service.
North Carolina prepares a major presence for Chicago with 500 photographic views of state industries including trucking, fishing and water power sites. Featured gems, aqua marines, rubies, emeralds and a Hiddenite ring highlight a diverse show from Raleigh to Asheville led by William J. Coite and Prof. J. A. D. Stephenson.
D. B. E. F. Dixon resigns as president of Greensboro College effective in June. He will be replaced by Dr. Fr. Reid of Raleigh, confirmed by the Senate. Also notes Senate confirmations of various U S diplomats, and a life-saving service report of a schooner ashore near Valse Cape with nine crew aboard.
Southern Associated Press reports welcoming arrangements in Richmond for about thirty governors and dignitaries attending the Southern States convention. Gov. Foster of Louisiana and others from Maryland North Carolina Alabama Missouri Kentucky Georgia Mississippi were noted. some voiced regrets. Also notes President Cleveland’s planned Chicago trip for the Columbian Exposition opening.
The Hampton Roads Naval Rendezvous Executive Committee outlines a week of events in Norfolk starting April 17 with a free excursion for school children to view world navies aboard the Columbian. Bicycle contests shift to Tuesday the 18th with an amateur regatta, followed by international sailing races, a grand parade, military and naval band contests, fireworks, an international ball, and a finale of international races and pyrotechnics.
Sale notices list mortgage and deed of trust foreclosures in Wake County. Properties include the Evans homestead 74 acres Cary Township, various Trent Street area parcels in Raleigh, and life estate interests. Advertises sale by auction at Raleigh courthouse with terms one half cash and balance with interest.
Wake County court documents announce a sale of a Raleigh land lot adjoining Mrs Laura Winston as part of the Mary Perkinson estate. The property, portion of city lot No 115 on Bloodworth and Morgan streets, will be sold at the county courthouse door on a Saturday in April by trustee AW Haywood and others, per the February 21 deed of trust recorded in Wake County.
