Medieval town notes amid war drift and Italian resilience
The piece reflects on a first medieval town with buff stones and arches, noting geraniums on balconies and gentle streets, then shifts to war reporting of German snipers and a Lancashire gunner recounting a near-miss. It contrasts Italian hardship, pride, and stubborn self-reliance with Allied occupation and democracy.
