Joliet Adopts Fire Hydrant Use Bans for Outsiders

Joliet on Wednesday passed two ordinances restricting fire fighting equipment and hydrant use by non residents. Effective Jan 1 1960 both laws target Hillcrest Shopping center awaiting annexation and require city oversight for hydrant access with fines from 10 to 200 dollars. The Fire Chief said non residents should not drain Joliet resources and Hillcrest will receive protection from Lockport.

Fire Prevention Week Emphasized as Daily Duty

Fire Chief Harold Rasmussen says fire safety is a daily program not limited to a week. Talks with clubs and tours of stations involve 60 visitors and students in schools learn prevention through drills and talks.

Rock Island Hikes Suburban Fares by 20 Percent

The Illinois Commerce Commission announced approval of a 20 percent fare increase for Rock Island Lines suburban service. The higher rates can take effect on one day’s notice, based on a deficit for the year ending August 1958. a 20 percent boost was also granted the previous year.

Joseph Frattini Named to Joliet Housing Board

Joseph Frattini of 1720 West Acres and president of Laborer's union No. 75 was named to the Joliet Housing Authority by city council approval. He replaces Ray Shea, president of the Will County Central Trades and Building council, who resigned for business reasons.

Merchants seek city funds to beautify Loop decorations

Don Wennlund of Joliet urges the city council to contribute to downtown Street decorations with plans for four annual changes at an estimated cost of 60,000. Local merchants have donated about Bor to date as the group advances loop property ALS aims. Councilman William H. Wilson notes past decor declarations and suggests a formal funds request to the budget committee.

Joliet Man Charged After Fatal Hinsdale Pedestrian Crash

A 37 year old Joliet man, Alex Passas, was charged with driving too fast for conditions after his car fatally struck 63 year old Mary Evans Johnson as she crossed Route 66 near Hinsdale. Johnson died from head and internal injuries at Hinsdale Sanitarium. Passas posted a $2000 bond after temporary detention in Mt. Prospect jail.
