Yank infantry hold German winter line in Italy fight
The 34th Red Bull division troops faced urgent shortages of munitions and brutal hand to hand combat as German attempts to regain the objective met with fierce resistance. Despite long artillery barrages and heavy casualties, the battalion forced the enemy to abandon the position, tying down the Gothic line in northern Italy for four days and nights. Edward A. Marenche of Rockdale, a rifleman in the 168th Infantry, earned the Distinguished Unit Citation for seizing and holding key Mount Pantano positions that opened the route to the Rapido River valley.
