Gloomy future seen in big U S cities
Prof Louis Wirth of the University of Chicago warned at the 31st annual conference of the International City Managers Association in Chicago that the growth of large American cities has ended and wartime shifts to the suburbs will deepen urban decay. He urged vast rebuilding and major institutional readjustments to cope with an aging population and changing service needs. State and county governments are taking over leadership roles, curbing city powers and financing.
