Staff Artist James McGrath visited Liggett's drug store to observe a typical day of the loop merchants. Manager R. Paul McDowell known as Mac, greets customers with a cheery word and a smile despite his many duties.
The grand jury will convene Monday in the circuit court to hear several cases. Among them is the Gould case arising from a summer accident on Draper Ave in which Gould struck and killed two children. Coroner Brannon re opened it after his election.
A capacity crowd will pack Chicago Stadium for the Chicago Tribune Golden Gloves finals. Thirty two fighters compete for titles, eight winners will face a New York championship team this summer, then meet a champions team. Joliet sectional winners were eliminated in the semifinals.
The forum on speed will discuss traffic safety next Monday evening over station WCLS at 8 15 o clock. Community Council members will present articles from the event traffic ordinance and related measures.
Edward Wilson, 24, of 404 N. Ottawa, arrested after breaking the National Jewelry window at 120 N. Chicago St. during a burglary, retrieving four intact diamond rings, fleeing on Van Buren St. Patrolman George Lagen pursued and fired into the air before Wilson surrendered near the Mode theatre. Wilson denied guilt at the police station despite witnesses and evidence.
Republican leaders picked Walter McGee for township collector and John Walsh Jr as supervisor against Henry Grassle amid a low enthusiasm mood. Democrats quickly nominated a candidate, while Martin Gleason faces no opposition for township clerk, and rumors hint Grassle may contest the field. Discontent runs through Joliet township as late party meetings set the campaign stage.
With under two weeks remaining the Trades and Labor Council Popularity contest narrows to Blanche Stuley of Coal City and Marguerite Shepley of Stage Hands and Movie Operators leading by about 500 votes. Josephine Malnar of Brewery Workers Union sits third and Frances Kraker of Oil Workers Union close behind.
Governor Horner plans a comprehensive inspection of Stateville and the old prison during a visit expected the latter part of next week. A. L. Bowen, head of the department of public welfare, alerted the governor to the urgent need for a new state prison due to severe overcrowding in the facility and across the state.
James Price, one of the Klein slayers who killed Deputy Warden Peter Klein in 1926, accepted a guilty plea and faced a life sentence. Four co-defendants were hanged, another killed trying to escape, and Bernard Roa, who fled, was believed to be in Mexico. Price had earlier been imprisoned for robbery and later linked to the long-ago murder case.
Philip Gis of Chicago, vice president and sales director for Meyer Booth Advertising Service, spoke on syndicate advertising development at Joliet club dinner. Stanley Kohn chaired the program as the first dinner meeting of the year. C. H. Peterson is club president.
Miss Jane Carlin daughter of Dr and Mrs Charles J Carlin was Founders Day Queen at the University of Illinois. She was chosen from 32 candidates and sat on a throne on the Illinois Union float during the parade. Attendants were Rachel Collins Margaret Livingstone and Frances Douthill. The event marked the sixty ninth anniversary of the state coeducational institution. Miss Carlin is a member of Chi Omega.
