The Illinois legislature enacted a minimum wage for city firemen and policemen. The state Supreme Court upheld the measure as constitutional, allowing cities to bear the added expense. Some lawyers demanded a rehearing as capital on the ruling. the court has now continued the case.
A motion picture on hazards of modern industry and worker safeguards will be shown Tuesday evening June 28 at 7 30 in Joliet high school auditorium. Governor Horner endorses it. speakers include Mayor George T Jones Martin P Durkin Joseph T Faust and C B Cannon. About 5000 tickets distributed. laws on worker protection to be available.
A celebration after the Louis Schmeling fight ended in homicide. Howard Taber, 43, was stabbed by Howard Calloway, 24, in a street confrontation after Calloway slapped Mildred Jones. Taber died minutes later at Vick's Tavern. Calloway fled to the Jones home and returned with a bread knife, then stabbed Taber at St. Louis and Osgood streets. Police responded, Taber dying on the sidewalk.
The condition of three people injured in the explosion at the Prince Castle ice cream parlor on June 15 is now favorable. The victims are Miss Louise Gale severely burned about the face and eyes Miss Sally Welch and Arnold Weldt whose throat and lungs were affected by gas.
The City Car line operated by Chicago parties for over a year is under new management after a week long reorganization. New cars will be placed in service and a zone system for fixing cab rates has been worked out. Offices are in the Walsh building on Clinton street.
C A Mitchel founder of the Mitchel brewery at Mokena fights a receiver appointment as Referee in Bankruptcy John Haley schedules a hearing next Wednesday morning. Mitchel says outsiders seek control of the corporation and blocked Chicago men from operating the brewery in violation of an existing understanding.
Paul Schoene unveils the new Swiss Patio at the Woodruff hotel. Max Herzog of Chicago designed alpine scenes in cool tones. A fresh band, touring the western states, provides entertainment as visitors enjoy the newly completed summer garden.
Calloway surrendered to police after a shooting that sent Taber to the hospital where he died. He admitted two men had vied for iiss Jones's affections for seven years and was formally charged with murder by the state attorney's office, with arraignment planned for the afternoon.
Mr and Mrs Charles J Carlson of 217 Comstock street celebrate their golden wedding anniversary this Sunday with open house at home. Married June 24 1888 in Stockholm Sweden the couple has children Ernest Esther Edith Pearson and Ellen Bloomquist seven grandchildren and long service including a police role and a watchman post for Sweet Orr.
