County physician Dr. H. A. Patterson reports greatly improved conditions at the ill County Poor Farm over the past two weeks. He says sick inmates are now receiving proper food and that sanitary conditions have improved, countering recent Spectator stories of mismanagement and uniform meals.
Governor Horner plans a statewide tour to inspect state institutions. The purpose is to judge conditions firsthand and place suitable wardens and assistants in vacancies. Rumors link former mayor George Sehring to the warden post, with two downstate Democrats also pursuing the job.
A fire starting from defective wiring threatened the chapel of St. Joseph's hospital last night. A hospital sister spotted flames and raised the alarm. Firemen from the nearby engine house and headquarters company battled the blaze and extinguished it with hand pumps.
William Wright aged 17 nephew of Mary Walker builder of the Walker Hotel later named West Pines was arrested at a Western Avenue home last night on a disturbance charge. Police found a revolver in the car Wright drove.
