Ice Breakers Keep Illinois Waterway Open In Cold Snap

Ice breakers Fern and Tom Sawyer labored to clear the Illinois Waterway as ice formed fast, with 1200 horsepower towboats and Amsterdam or Dutch plows. The government effort eased traffic, though Central Barge company criticized the ice breaking. A sinkage occurred near Havana due to a buried obstruction. recovery plans followed.

Alaska expert to speak at Joliet high school

The Rev Father Bernard Hubbard author and lecturer will present Alaska In The War at Joliet Township High School auditorium on February 4 under Joliet Catholic high school. He recently toured military camps and spoke to servicemen about Alaska where he is director of civilian defense. He will speak to students and the public at 3:30 PM with 25 cent tickets and again at 8 PM with 75 cent tickets. Tickets available at Tillman’s McCarthy’s Joliet Barrett Clothiers Lockport and Donahoe Grocery Wilmington.
