Romeoville plans $9 million suburb expansion project

Plans reveal a $9 million Romeoville expansion including a 260,000 square foot shopping center with 57 stores, two chain outlets and a department store plus a civic center for city hall police and fire services. Construction may start June 1 with occupancy by December 1959 and population expected to exceed 5,000 by 1960.

Civil Defense mobilizes 200 bed mobile hospital unit

Joliet Civil Defense announces arrival of a 200 bed emergency hospital unit donated by the Civil Defense Mobilization Authority. The Barrett Hardware plant will store equipment valued at 45000 dollars with space for 400 square feet, expanding to 15000 square feet in a disaster. Dr Leonard Roblee heads the medical unit. 132 staff are needed plus 50 more volunteers. Carl Wilson named administrator.

Century of Gas Celebrated in Joliet by Officials

Northern Illinois Gas Co and Joliet leaders mark 100 years of gas service with a 6:15 p m lamplighting at the Will County Courthouse site of the first gas light installed in 1859. Mayor Hennessy and County Supervisor Chair Baltz to receive lamp from Marvin Chandler. A dinner at Woodruff Hotel will feature remarks and a Then and Now skit. Open house at 63 N Chicago tomorrow and Saturday to display gas appliances and era costumes with refreshments.

Rural teachers institute Monday at Manhattan school

Rural and village teachers will attend an all day institute Monday January 26 at Manhattan school. County superintendent Verne E Cracker said schools will close for the day. An illustrated talk on Russian education will open the program at 9 a m with Murray Lincoln Miller of Illinois State Normal University as speaker.
