Meat plants seek farm help to ease packing labor shortage
The American Meat Institute representing over 400 packers urged farm workers to fill full or part time roles in packing plants to handle the spring livestock influx. They warned the labor shortage could worsen as pigs reach market, noting hog prices near a ceiling of 75 dollars on the Chicago basis. The group argued the ceiling was too high relative to wholesale prices plus subsidies.
