Judge Wilson Wins Will County Victory in 1939 Election
In the June 1939 judicial return Judge Edwin L. Wilson carried Will County over Republicans. James V. Bartley, a GOP nominee backed by George A. Barr, faced a shocking result as Democrats surged and suspicions of election repeaters arose. Bartley carried Kankakee and Iroquois counties. A post election probe led to a grand jury, indictments, and trials including Patrick D. Fahey’s conviction later reversed. Dennis Kelly won an acquittal, Burke’s bid led to Tampering charges, and Kelly’s conviction was reversed by the Supreme Court before a renewed trial and acquittal.
