The Mora county district court adjourned February 14 after a three day fall term. A grand jury returned six indictments and three not true bills while no petit jury was called. Victor Noble was found guilty of unlawfully carrying a pistol and fined $50 with 90 days jail suspended on good behavior and costs. Marquez pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter and received three to five years. Several other indictments included assault with intent to rape and larceny of a horse, with No True Bills issued in three cases. Respondents involved included Judge Leahy, District Attorney Chester A. Hunker, Assistant DA Luis Arrijo, and officials from Las Vegas. Noble formerly lived in Raton. The trial schedule for April 1918 was noted.
The note reports Nels Wetterhus and his Ardmore Oklahoma bride Mrs Henderson marriage on October 9 in Ardmore, with Stooky of Gainesville Texas as a family link. It mentions their two daughters aged 9 and 13 and wishes for a joyful married life. Also cited is Hugh Mitchell marrying his bride and plans for their future ranch home on the mesa.
Teach Wireless aims to train 15,000 radio operators for the Army. The two month course starts December 8, 1917, with 80 words per minute typing capability, plus military drill. Costs cover transportation and $40 for board and room. no tuition. Preference to those liable for immediate call.
Seventeen cars of cattle were shipped from Roy last Friday night and divided among stockmen. A J Burleson led with five cars, F A Roy two, T E Mitchell two, O G Thompson one, George Ray and others contributing. Webb Kidd and Burleson hauled several loads to Springer, with more shipments planned as cars become available. Cattle are in fine condition on the well cared for range and compare well to eastern corn-fed cattle.
