The New Mexico Council of Defense sent seed notes to Agent GR Abernathy for collection and placed them at Roy Trust and Savings Bank and Citizens State Bank of Mills for payment before maturity from first sales of the mortgaged crop. Harry Lammon buys Eupho Baca’s Ford to convert into a tractor. Lammon plans wider farming next year. C J Knouff from Fort Worth rents a state land farm and renews leasing efforts. Voters approved three amendments with marked unity and no defense of the Tax or Judicial changes. Early voting began, workers checked lists by noon, and cars waited outside. The precincts saw orderly night and a sober, businesslike result in a dry state. Local precinct returns followed.
State Game Warden Theodore Roualt from Santa Fe arrived Wednesday to testify against the Dawson party after they killed fawns last week. The men pleaded guilty and a judge imposed the minimum $50 fine, a decision judged too lenient by locals who want stronger enforcement of the law.
In Roy New Mexico the local butcher Mr Crowe from Roy Trading Co spent Saturday traveling to Raton to visit family for Sunday. A Literary Society formed at Roy School plans evenings and meetings with a focus on entertainment and mental development. J M Johnson Sr bought the Louis Branch farm near Roy to winter near the high school and will move a daughter for medical care in El Paso and visits to Mineral Wells or Hot Springs afterward.
A week ago a robbery at Roy Trading Co warehouse left flour, sugar, lard stolen and hidden in old lumber piles. Evidence points to a planned job under moonlight but no arrests have been made. A separate report notes a burned saddle found near the western land, while local names Fred Strong and Mrs. Crosby appear in transient notes about travels and sales.
Mrs Chas Weatherill of Mills visited with her parents Mr and Mrs Dick Pendleton. Mrs J Floersheim in San Francisco hosts Leo Rychlewski and Barry Kirby of Mare Island Navy Yard at their home twice weekly. Frisco residents entertain Rockies as a local custom. Clayton looks to a Clayton Las Vegas highway via Roy and a Red River bridge. Prof Russell's father reports husking corn in Missouri and laments leaving the mesa life.
The Daughters of Rebekah arranged a luncheon for the initiation that was to be held last Friday night at the hall but no candidates attended. They will retry Friday evening November 16 hoping for better luck.
The Red Cross Auxiliary met Monday and chose officers led by Chairman Mrs Frank A Roy and Secretary Mrs Irvin Ogden with a full set of committees for supplies and finance. Members urged knitting for soldiers, with deadlines and recent donations totaling several five dollar gifts from locals and a remittance from Pablo P Branch and family from Hanna Wyoming. The group aims to expand activities in support of the Soldier Boys and thanks supporters for their liberal help.
Fred Brown celebrates a new well on the Dr. Evans farm purchased for a home. Halder Bros drilled for over a week. Monday night the bit penetrated from sandstone into open space, plunging 50 feet before retrieval. The hole extends 413 feet, and water supply seems limited only by pumping capacity. Brown’s perseverance is noted as rewarded.
Pastor announces services including a Wednesday Nov 14 business meeting after prayer, a Friday Nov 17 quarterly meeting with Dr Bright at Mills, and Sunday Nov 18 sermons at Roy morning and evening. Mrs Wm Johnson delivers mail by Ford on route A when no carrier is available.
Fred Brown purchased a 4 inch pump pipe and working barrel from Floersheim Co to service a failed well. He will test his new well using a heavy pump jack and engine, with a test yield of 5 gallons per minute.
The ordinance defines nuisances including trash weeds and damaged goods in private yards and streets. It requires removal within 48 hours for debris and 5 days for weeds after notice. Violations incur fines from ten to thirty dollars or jail time, with penalties collected from property owners. Passed November 5 1917 by Mayor Frank A. Roy and Acting Clerk Wm. G. Johnson.
George Cable travels Tuesday to White Signal New Mexico near Silver City and Lordsburg to spend the winter for his health while continuing to read the Silver City Independent.
F. G. Campbell arrived back Sunday after a visit to Los Angeles, returning with notes on business and meetings conducted during the trip.
Mrs C W Merrill of Mills traveled by train Sunday to Los Angeles California where she will stay with her sister until Christmas. A California native she takes pride in the Mills area claim as her home.
