Madrid magnate in hoax letters entangle New Mexican official

Eduardo Blanco Rabul of Madrid, dying in a Spanish dungeon with a gunshot wound, allegedly has a daughter set to inherit half a million dollars. Jose Inez Roybal, a former county commissioner, traced letters to Spain and concluded the whole affair is a long running hoax exploiting chivalry and promising wealth, as postal officials express frustration.

Increase of liquor fees in the United States in 1908

Washington reports that cities with 20,000 or more population paid about forty two million dollars in liquor licenses for 1908, up three million from the prior year. Licensing rose as many large cities collected higher fees while several areas went dry, with Texas Wisconsin and New York showing the most saloons per population.

Joseph Wendling former janitor at St Johns parochial school in Louisville Kentucky was arrested in San Francisco charged with the murder of eight year old Alma Kellner. He admitted his identity after being found hiding under a sink and showing a bullet wound from France and a ship tattooed on his body. A $6000 reward was offered for his capture. He denied involvement in the crime.

Derailed Tender Causes Tracks Damage Near Bisbee

The tender of passenger engine No. 8 between Bisbee and Douglas derailed near Bisbee tearing up track and damaging ties. The engineer stopped the train in time preventing a plunge into the ditch. In a separate report Juan Vigil is hospitalized in Santa Fe after being struck by lightning near Eston ia with burns on his head face arms and leg and a shoe burned off.

Brutal murder in Socorro targets Frank and Sam Conway

Sheriff reports two brothers Frank Conway and Sam Conway are wanted for the brutal killing of Emil Katzenstein at the Richards Hotel in Socorro last night. Katzenstein, 22, died after a gunshot wound to the left front chest. The motive is believed to be jealousy. A coroner's jury and posse are organized as authorities pursue the suspects.

Struck on Head With Large Stone in Mountain Outing

Bruce Carmack of San Juan was struck on the head by a large stone rolling from the mountains and was unconscious for about thirty minutes. He suffered no serious injury.
