Thirty pupils sat the recent examination with sixteen passing high grades and four missing by one study. Miss Gertrude Bruce and Ermal Greenwood tied for high honors and will be joint valedictorians at the eighth grade graduation.
Mrs. Mary Waters and Miss Eugennia Roy visited friends in Springer Sunday. A surprise party was held Thursday afternoon at Mrs. Al Hanson’s home, hosted by her mother Mrs. J Floersheim and sister Mrs. Melville Floersheim. A large number of Indian Were present and enjoyed the event with refreshments.
The I O O F lodge voted to cancel a public anniversary celebration set for April 26 and instead hold a private banquet for members of the two lodges and their families. The event will be postponed a week due to court week. An impromptu program will accompany the banquet at the hall with participation by the Rebekah Lodge.
Mr and Mrs Kilmurray from Gardner New Mexico stopped Tuesday at C L Justice home in Roy en route to see Mrs Henry Stone in La Cinta Canyon. Mrs Kilmurray is remembered as Belle Van Horne and they drive a stylish Studebaker runabout.
Senate sponsor A A Jones and House sponsor W B Walton introduce a bill restricting creation and expansion of Forest Reservations in New Mexico. No reserves may be created or added without Congress, a measure hailed as aligned with public will and supported by Main Street as Washington’s new master.
R. J. Heflin hosts his Texas brother during a Texas visitor’s stay. The guest complains about the wind but Heflin quips that it does not blow this way all the time and sometimes blows from the other direction. Carlos Branch and Miss Worley drove to Springer in a Studebaker Sunday to see the ball game.
Great Di vide prints halftone cuts for the panorama of the excursion at Ray this week. The cuts are large, usable only on full columns of the SA. They will be mounted and printed as soon as room is found. The picture is described as a great one.
C L Wensell supervisor for Charles Ilfeld Co visited Corona New Mexico and the Ilfeld Retail house there last week. He also toured the Santa Rosa branch and said conditions are better there than at either location. Signs of preparedness against a Mexican invasion are seen in the south end, but business is good.
Dick Boulware Will Hill Will Mitchell and neighbors visited Roy to buy supplies for new telephone lines to Pleasant View. Joe Mitchell a SA subscriber joins his father's paper while married. Ben Sturgis sends a check from Eldorado Springs and plans to farm there this summer, seeking sale of land at 25 dollars per acre.
Mrs Donald Upton and Rev Price, from Columbia, recently treated at Plumlee's Hospital, returned home Monday after final proof on a claim Tuesday. Border conditions are unsettled with people on edge over a potential Mexican invasion. many fear they may not return if the fighting crosses the border.
Granville Kitchell is chosen by the M. V. A. of Roy to represent them at the Head Camp in Albuquerque on April 28. The community expects him to perform well in service.
The subject, pictured above, is a busy Roy resident and pastor Rev Hearn. A scholar and Christian worker, he was born in Portland Indiana and is a Hiram College graduate who studied oratory in Ann Arbor. He led the local Y M C A, directed a county N M E A group, taught Greek and oratory, managed the Hiram College train team, and helped form a thriving community hall reading room. His efforts to uplift youth, organize the church and offer Spanish lessons mark him as a key moral force in Roy.

The auto owners of the mesa meet to discuss Santa Fe asking volunteers with cars to aid militia and Horde Guards if needed. Prediction suggests mass mobilization if Mexican forces attack New Mexico. Ellis Abernathy returns from Dawson on an Indian Motorcycle and will work on Floersheim roof flashings before heading to his Colorado homestead. Lena Bayler, living with the Abernathys and studying in Roy, is sent home by her mother’s illness and returns with the family. Mrs Bayler’s health improves and Lena resumes school work.
The program lists an April 22 1617 Christian Endeavor gathering with song prayer on the topic How lying undermines the character. Readings solo clipping questions reading Mrs Defrees business session and a six o’clock start with cordial invitation to Clara Martin and Mr Newman.
Postmaster Johnson reports two new Rural Routes from Roy will begin June 1, replacing Route No 1. Route 1 runs from Roy to Justice Corner and Pleasant View School House with daily service. Route A serves north of Roy and nearby schools. A temporary carrier for Route A starts 7 A M with back by noon. salaries set and 150 families must sign a petition to ensure daily service.
The United States Civil Service Commission announces an exam for Mora County New Mexico to fill motor rural route positions. Exam locations Roy and East Las Vegas on May 10 1917, open to married male citizens domiciled in the county. Applicants must provide a vehicle with 800 pounds capacity and 80 cubic feet, and file forms and a statement of equipment with the commission in Washington D C at earliest practicable date. Sung for above route $1 608.
Leg broken and foot crushed when Leg Floersheim slipped while starting a gaso line engine last Friday at Janitas ranch. Dr. Panton of Spring er provided surgical aid. Floersheim will be laid up for some time but not permanently maimed. Glass for Floersheim building arrived and installed improving appearance before completion. John H. Guyer arrived from Clayton Monday to demo Staude tractor conversion for Ford car.
Joe Clark a salesman for Floersheim Store went to Spring er Sunday to see the ball game and catch up with friends and his former residence.
Bob Alldredge traveled in his large Franklin automobile to attend a Sunday ball game and visit friends, enjoying the outing and social connections in town.
Mrs Chas Weatherill and her daughter Helen Corine have returned to their Mills home on Saturday. The infant had been seriously ill with pneumonia but is improving.
A baby boy was born Friday April 13 to Mr and Mrs Elmer Neal. The note hopes the date pairing proves lucky for the child.
Mills and Springer played a fast tied game Sunday at Springer with a 5 5 score through six innings. An error by Mills late in the sixth gave Springer the edge and the two teams plan a rematch next Sunday at Mills. A league to raise standards and exclude weak teams was formed by their towns and others. A C Trujillo of Solano, a Mora County commissioner member, paid a year’s subscription and is now active in county affairs.
Grover Till of Mills completed final proof on his claim before Judge Foster Tuesday. He spoke little about the school election but suggested conditions are going to change. Mills resident Mrs. B E Choate of Solano has been in Dr. Plumlee's hospital this week for gall stones and is improving toward an early return home.
Pete Gimson from Cimarron Sundays notes trap pingis remains good and is impressed by guards at all bridges as a precaution in the unsettled state of affairs.
