Legislative Assembly Notes From New Mexico’s Thirty Fifth Session

The weeklong session featured bills on bilingual education in public schools and district attorney districts. Council actions included memorials for Col Chavez and libel law debates, plus river commissioner elections and bribery penalties. House measures covered funding for a court house in Luna county and five year teaching certificates. Additional items touched poll tax collection and rail passenger fares. Socorro Sanatorium Site Visit By National Committee

A Sanitation committee arrives in Socorro to view climate and advantages for a proposed sanitarium. Members from St. Louis Topeka Chicago and Edwardsville tour hot springs and mesa overlooks, meet local hosts, and attend a 8 PM smoker at Knights of Pytheas hall. Local effort emphasizes Socorro’s natural benefits and hospitality. Also contains an unrelated medical ad for Hall's Catarrh Cure with testimonials and products.

New Tunnel for Raton Mountain and Road Upgrades

The Santa Fe Railway plans major northern New Mexico improvements including a lower, longer tunnel under Raton mountain to replace the old one. Shoemaker canyon will be rebuilt with six and a half miles of new track as floods last fall caused damage. Three hundred fifty workers are set to start, with numbers rising.

Against dividing Socorro County cattle and horse protection

A Socorro public meeting, presided by Don Juan José Baca, heard strong opposition to dividing Socorro County to grant the western portion to Grant County. The audience urged sending resolutions to Hon. H. O. Bursum and local legislators. A cold wave hit the nation, with record lows from the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf, disrupting traffic. The Cattle and Horse Protective Association of New Mexico named Socorro for its next general meeting on March 2, with W. Medley as chair and a planned gathering at the Commercial Club rooms. A church notice announced preaching on The Syrian Leper, His Care and Conversion, and The Story of the Little Maid, followed by a congregational business meeting on February 26 to set salaries, appropriations, and elect leaders.

Statehood bill sent to conference committee

The House sent the statehood bill to a conference committee in Washington. If it reaches a vote after the panel, it will be in a greatly altered form that may disappoint its strongest supporters. The bill might pass with Senate amendments if Speaker Cannon allowed a vote. Mesdames C T Brown and J H Hilton traveled to Albuquerque to hear Melba sing.

Regents named to School of Mines board in Texas

The territorial council on Wednesday confirmed Governor Otero's appointment of School of Mines regents. A. T. Hilton of San Antonio fills Fitch's unexpired term to Sept 2, 1905. C. T. Brown serves five years from Sept 2, 1903. P. J. Savage serves five years from Sept 2, 1904, replacing Bartlett's vacancy.

Stockman Henry Williams Sees Saturated Rangeland Near Socorro

Henry Williams from Datil ranch arrived in Socorro last Saturday. He reports the entire western county ground is saturated by recent rains and snows and predicts an exceedingly poor season for stockmen. He also spent time duck hunting along the river north of town.
