Death of Lorens H Johnston prompts Challis reflections
Lorens H Johnston, early Challis pioneer and former U S Land Office commissioner, died Sept 24 1910 at Challis Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in New York about 76 years ago, married to a local wife, a veteran of the Civil War era travel, and long tied to Custer and Lemhi counties. His funeral was held with G A R participation as friends mourned a generous, hospitable citizen who helped shape the region.
