County commissioners meet in Challis on September 12 1904 set the tax levy at 3.75 per 100 assessable property. The 1903 levy was 3.50 and officials note expenses rise while assessments stay similar. They raise questions about county finances and urge retrenchment in fiscal management.
Baldy Davis, known as Baldy Kelley in Mackay, arrested in Hailey after a tip from Mackay officers. He allegedly hired two grey horses and a new buggy, traded them for a horse, buggy, harness, and $100 at Hailey, and had only $1.50 when seized. Brought to Challis, jailed, waived exam, facing immediate trial as district court sits. Davis claims to be a horse trainer once employed by Marcus Daly for seven years and cites drunkenness as cause of trouble in the past month.
The district court for Custer County met in Challis with Judge Jas M Stevens presiding. Attendees included stenographer C. Deitrich clerk Geo Keyes and county officials along with several defense and prosecuting attorneys. Two criminal cases and about twenty total cases were on the docket as adjournment nears this week.
Races at Challis race track on Sept 15 and 16 attracted large crowds and notable outside horses Salmon Puhsamaroi and Lehi Indians. Events included a 1 Fourth Mile Dash 600 yard dash and a dramatic Indian race. Plunger and Dewey scored wins amid close finishes. Weather favored outdoor sport though track was heavy. two dances followed the events with local officials and residents remarking on the lively atmosphere and strong attendance.
