Welcome Home Honor for Challis Philippine Vet

Challis celebrates returning Custer county volunteer Henry Horton from the Philippines with a town welcome on Tuesday the 3rd. Flags, music, speeches by Wm. T. Reeves and P. M. Bruner, schoolchildren singing, a grand ball, and vivid tributes mark the homecoming amid decorations across Main Street and public buildings. Horton, once 180 pounds, returned thin at about 140 due to wounds, fever, and tropical exposure after famed Idahos charge at the Battle of Malinta.

Death of John W. Hoffman At Salmon River Near Challis

John W. Hoffman died at his home near Salmon River three miles from Challis on Tuesday night October 8 1899 after a year of ill health. A native of Iowa age about 60 he lived in Custer and Challis for 19 to 20 years working at the Custer mill. He was an old soldier and Mason, with burial services conducted by local Masons at the I O O F Hall. He leaves a wife and two sons, and his death draws the community's sympathy.
