Fall weather notes and Challis county election tale

In Challis this fall the valley settles into harvest calm as thrashings near completion and salmon fail to move due to diphtheria. Voter turnout is expected around 240 in Challis precinct with nearly 200 registered. Mrs L Hillman visits from the Teton country while future installments of Loon Creek by Daylight are promised. A Congregational minister will preach at Ellis and May next Sunday. The County Commissioners held a regular meeting, the last for the current board. A church social is planned for Friday night October 12. Attorney W W Adamson is nominated for a Challis Democratic ticket seat. A notable piece recalls a Philadelphia child named Mozart among others, and O M Gant travels for mining business. Congressman French spoke in Challis to a large audience, praised for his style though not flawless. The Lec County Democratic ticket is listed in full. W E Hanna and family return from Silver Creek. New fall millinery arrives at Mrs Nellie Holzel’s. The paper contrasts Democratic and Republican platforms regarding Gooding’s administration. A Mackay Miner critique of political coverage appears, with local figures cited. A bay horse story leads to Bayhorse mine lore about rich ore and a ram horn discovery inspiring the mine’s name.

Infant Dies in Idaho, Four Months Old

Sidney Chester Harry, four months and two days old, died Friday morning September 28, 1906, at 7:15. He was born May 26, 1906, in Patterson Idaho, the younger of two children. Funeral services were at May cemetery led by Rev. Hoar with Mrs. Murphy and a choir of about a dozen. Coffin decorated with flowers. He leaves his mother and father and a brother. sympathy from Challis and Pahsamaroi communities.

Custer county Democrats pledge support for Dubois in 1906 Senate race

In Challis on September 28 1906 the Custer county Democratic convention reaffirmed loyalty to Jefferson Jackson and Bryan principles. They endorsed United States Senate nominee Fred T Dubois and approved the state platform. They call for tax reform railroads responsibility direct primary law Employers Liability Act and Eight Hour law and denounce Gov Gooding and the Gooding Borah Republican machine. Local party mudsling clash over bonds and endorsements

The Cus ter county Republican group lacks a local platform and supports Governor Gooding while opposing county re bonding. Party men J C Fox John Stephens and C V Hanson favored the bond, yet the party criticizes itself. It promises Mackay Miner $100 to publish mudsling pieces signed by The Committee. The Democrat paper was offered the same amount but refused. Democrats expect to win on merit, not mudsling.

Rich Strike at Custer Sparked Lively Gold Find

A sensational strike on the Bachelor property at Custer mountain yields ore with twenty ounces of gold and 150 ounces of silver per ton. Operated under bond by Henry McCornick and partners, the discovery is hailed as the region’s most significant since ore first appeared at Lucky Bay. The Bachelor claim lies about half a mile east of the McGovern group, a Salt Lake interest competing with a long-standing rival in the Idaho camp.

Machine Shop Fire at Mackay Destroys Plant

Word arrived Wednesday of a fire at the White Knob company machine shop and sampling works in Mackay. The building was burned to the ground. One man lost his life, several others were severely burned. Valuable machinery and materials were destroyed.
