In a perilous voyage, the Eugenie battles a Cuban renegade. After nursing wounds and fending off attack, the crew watches the captor die in a dramatic final struggle. The scene closes with signals for rescue as night falls and the ship presses toward an uncertain horizon.
Three days pass aboard the drifting ship as the crew fails to wound or drive out the demon in the cabin. Hyslop, moved to a forecastle berth, recalls being stabbed and rendered senseless. The captors recount the captain's death and Will White’s fate, while the destroyer remains in command of their lives.
