The poem contrasts back of the rose with the bud stem seed and root as life’s pursuit. It frames the rose as a thought designed by mind and beauty, with purpose power wisdom and love guiding the soul. The closing lines speak of the rose’s soul living beyond dust and snow through divine will.
On Monday February twenty ninth Challis hosted a masquerade ball with good attendance. Costumes were home made yet clever, and many attendees wore handsome outfits. Rose, about 34, resided in Custer county since 1886 and faced personal troubles including a horse sale dispute.
A flurry of unverified reports suggests England allied with Japan and France with Russia, while Paris notes a dispatch claiming Russian forces repelled a Japanese attack on Port Arthur and damaged four Japanese battleships, a claim later contradicted by Japan sources. St. Petersburg later reports four Japanese battleships and two transports sunk by Russians.
