William Taft of Ohio was nominated for president with Sherman of New York chosen for vice president at the National Republican Convention in Chicago. The gathering drew less enthusiasm than past years, buoyed mainly by mentions of Roosevelt, while Taft faced critique as weak and anti-labor.
The January 1908 county session in Custer Idaho reviewed bids for all election printing needs. The Messenger bid promises newspaper printing, election tickets, ballots, and related materials for general or special elections, plus one year of the Messenger copy for $240.00.

Martin Taliaferro shift boss at the Lost Packer mine in Loon Creek was trapped by rock and earth on Thursday morning the 18th. Rescued by fellow miners, he suffered three broken ribs and internal injuries and died about 6 p.m. He was described as an industrious young man.
Harry Charles, formerly connected with Mr. Heinze’s smelter operation in Butte and now of Salt Lake, claims he will soon assume charge of the Lost Packer mine near Ivers Idaho. The Lost Packer Mining Co owns nine claims 120 miles west of Mackay with a 100 ton smelter and tunnels reaching depths up to 2000 feet. The vein runs 2 to 7 feet wide and the ore carries gold silver and copper, with a well-developed road to Mackay and Salt Lake control of the property.
