Irrigation Canal Completes Major Round Valley Project

The Salmon River Land and Irrigation Co completes a 10 mile canal in Round Valley enabling 4,000 acres of sagebrush land to be reclaimed. The event occurred July 21 with 200 locals celebrating, featuring a Challis Brass Band and speeches by L. E. Glennon and D. W. Truitt. The project cost about 50,000 dollars, water costs 25 dollars per inch, and the system conveys 400 cubic feet per second from Salmon River via tunnel and flume.

Sudden Death of John Fleming Known as Biting Jack

John Fleming nicknamed Biting Jack died suddenly at George Ellis ranch in Ellis Idaho on Wednesday afternoon July 20 1910 probably from heart failure. He was riding with Ellis daughter at the time and expired abruptly. An Idaho pioneer, Fleming was born in Boston in 1835 and traveled widely before settling in Challis where he became a noted local figure. Funeral services were held in the Odd Fellows Hall Friday July 22 and a brass band accompanied his funeral procession to the cemetery.

Stanley Basin Rapidly Settled and Farmed Up

Stanley Basin, once viewed as stock grazing country, is being rapidly settled with extensive farming. Water from Salmon River is drawn for reclamation and development. Joe Hill notes F. J. Clyde of Stanley has a very fine wheat field rivaling any he has seen in his travels.

Custom Smelting Silver Lead Mine Owners in Seafoam District

Notice proclaims ore treatment at Greyhound Mill near Sheep Mountain and Stanley Idaho. Details include permits, diversion of 3.2 cfs from Big Creek for irrigation and domestic use, lands of 160 acres, permit 3704, completion by May 30 1910, with Jane Hawley as permit holder and D G Martin State Engineer noted. First publication July 28, 1919.
