Lost River Battle of 1878 at Salmon City camp
In August 1878 a Lemhi County party under Col. Shoup and Jesse McCaleb defended Challis bound convoy near Salmon City against an estimated 57 to 100+ Lakota and Bannock allied Indians led by Buffalo Horn. McCaleb died, as did wagon guard Jesse, during a harrowing two day siege with improvised breastworks of flour sacks and wagon yokes. After fierce firefights the assailants withdrew leaving the survivors to summon aid.
