A small ad notes grooming services offered at fixed prices. The listing highlights a first class standard with a shave priced at 25 cents and a hair cut at 50 cents, indicating a period price point. Local barbering services advertised for quick, affordable grooming.
Hallis celebrated with a minstrel show by the Amusement Club at the opera house featuring local youths as coons and strong leading performances. July 4 events included a Liberty parade led by the Challis Band and a well attended program at the opera house with child performances and patriotic dances.
A half mile street race from the lumber yard to Garden Creek drew heavy interest with $10 for first, $5 for second, and $300 for third. Willard Frost won, John Pushaw took second, and a fast field faded up the hill. Time 7:30. George Ellis ran a earlier 7 minutes in a similar course. A separate sea shots event offered $25, featuring eight men per side with Gayle and Campbell captains. Gayle’s team won in two heats, the first in 12 minutes and the second in 4 23.
A forenoon program on July 5 featured a ring contest and filling contest with notable participants Harvey Calvin Jim Calvin and Chas Ernst. Events included a brown lavatory rock display, 10 minute time, and drill results with Joey Calvin achieving first in drilled 75-10 inches and Calvin second in drilled 64 inches.
The July Sth events featured hot 94 degree weather and multiple horse races owned by John and Lou Wells of Pabsamaroi with Corliss Murphey riding. Prizes included a saddle donated by Waters & Waters and a $60 baseball game between Vandervorts Scrubs and Challis Regulars ending three days of festivities with few fights or drunks.
The village of Challis Idaho proposes Local Improvement District Number Two for portions of Third Fourth Fifth and Seventh Streets between Main Pleasant Garden Creek and to place grading drainage and street work to proper grade. Estimated cost six hundred dollars with assessment on abutting properties. protests due by 6 pm July 1 1011. resolution passed June 2 1011.
Emil Schmidt, who worked in my barber shop for a few weeks for fifty per cent of the proceeds, left Challis on the 6th with all the cash taken and about 25 dollars on July 4th and 5th, believed headed for Butte. Public notice by J L Ebberts.
Sheriff Huntington will sell at public auction in Challis Idaho the Fort Pitt Mining and Milling Company mining claims in Valley Creek District to satisfy a judgment for 1009.40 dollars. The Pittsburgh Allegheny and Santa Rosa lode claims and improvements will go to the highest cash bidder on August 7 1011 at the county courthouse front door.
