Fourth of July celebration pleases town with parade and races

The Fourth of July drew large crowds with patriotic decorations and a State presentation by forty six girls led by Ruth Dorgan as Goddess of Liberty at Rodgers residence. A picnic had a full feast before Main Street athletic events featured ties and wins by local youths and women’s races, with McKendrick and Kirk family names prominent in early results.

Challis Fourth of July Sports and Races Recap

Lee Baxter wins two events in a Challis celebration with Edith Frost first in girls nail driving and Kate Nickerson second. Lee Baxter also wins the nickel novelty race while Amos Leaton places second in long events. John Calvin wins the running broad jump with 15 feet 1 inch, Ben Metzger takes the running high jump, and Lou Frost ties for second. A neighborhood baseball game ends 9 to 1 in favor of the Kids over the men. A late night grand ball caps the Fourth with horse races still planned.
