Stampede on the Texas Prairie 1876 Chronicle
The account recounts a 1876 cattle stampede near Comanche Springs driven by Wilson brothers and 23 cowboys with 15,000 head. A violent thunderstorm, a rainbow, and a perilous chase led to a staged milling maneuver in a wash called Stampede Gulley, saving most of the herd though 2,700 cattle were lost and later memorialized by the name.

No Mackintosh and the Ironies of Life
Col liper quotes a New York Sun tale of a man who, despite success and sanity, once resolved to end his life at sea. He delayed jumping because he lacked a mackintosh. He later survived, but decades later, a heavy rain without a coat led to pneumonia and his death at 97, suggesting fate and clothing shared the same cause.

Salmon and Whisky on the Spey River
Salmon fishing has been poor on the Spey this season due to whisky refuse from nearby distilleries. Anglers say the refuse poisons or repels the fish, while distillers claim the salmon crave it and grow fat. Either way the fish stop touching the flies.
