Rumors on Salt Lake streets say Clayton Mining and Smelting Company property may pass to an eastern syndicate under an option of no less than 1.5 million dollars. The identity of buyers is not disclosed, but ties to the Guggenheim Exploration Company are speculated. Meanwhile, clerical matters proceed at the county level, including sheep and cattle assessments and regulatory appointments.
The full board considered assessments for Patrick Lynch adding 40 head of range horses, while others including H. H. Cochran E. G. Dodge Alonzo Dodge T. W. Chivers Casper Mack and Lorenzo Falls appeared sworn with mixed changes. Joseph Rodgers had 50 cattle and 750 sheep added. No other notified persons appeared.
A Hailey Times report from Ruthrauff, Hernsheim, Walter and Hayes details two weeks of exploration at Loon Creek. High grade copper and gold ore have been found near the Lost Packer with one ledge 2,700 feet lower yielding $166 per ton in gold and high copper. The Lost Packer area shows over $300,000 in high grade ore and significant second grade ore as well. Months of surface shoots and drifting progress are noted with multiple levels opened, ore shoots 800 feet long, and a 750 foot interval remaining to mine. Previous shipments fetched $25,000 in Salt Lake market, netting about $250 per ton.
Work accelerates on the Loon Creek wagon road to the mine, with a saw mill and air compressor plant planned and a 10 percent maximum grade. Hailey visitors own 19 adjacent claims near Lost Packer, reporting rich ore and extensive surface mineralization. concurrent mining expansion includes a new strike under Foreman Leon John Kelley, as Challis hosts Republican delegates and shows Ringling Brothers and Unique Musical shows.
James H. VanCamp, early Custer county settler, endured a life risking river ordeal on July 26 at Leaton ford while fording Salmon river with his wagon and horses. He jumped into the swift water to reach shore as his team and wagon were swept downstream. Both Grey Jack and another horse drowned. VanCamp saved himself, recovering the wagon and harness downstream.
