Dan Caswell recounts the Thunder Mountain discovery by three Westbound prospectors in 1894. He describes starting with $64, staking claims, and profits from coalitions with Col Dewey and Pittsburg buyers, plus a vast gold bearing porphyry dike two and a half miles wide by ten miles long. Caswell cites hard work, isolation, and abundant gold dust, predicting a developing city and future mining prosperity near Thunder Mountain Idaho. The April meeting of the Custer county Board of Commissioners ran April 14 to 17. It records approval of a new Goldburg area road along the bar from Sec 8 to Sec 30, to be built by residents at their own expense, with abandonment of the ranch road. It also notes a road district 1 request to extend from the county line west along Sec 26/35 No 15 to the existing county road.
The board orders standard salaries for county officers including Sheriff 1500, Assessor 1500, Clerk Auditor 1500, Treasurer 900, Probate Judge 1500, School Superintendent 500, Coroner 100, Surveyor 100. It approves a $150 bill in the John W. Gue post mortem case and authorizes $200 for services by Angel assisting the County Attorney.
