A short verse from The Messenger dated April Fool's Day 1910 mocks seasonal chatter. The speaker notes the liar of Spring peeking out while folly freezes songs, referencing the Weather-man, Groundhog Day, a robin, and Northerly winds. The quip ends with maritime imagery and a quirky sign off.
A.F. Kavanaugh was down from Sunbeam last week. Assessor Burnett and family returned Friday night from Lost River. Frank Nickerson was on the sick list most of last week, but is now up and around. Carl Hanson is down near Salmon, where he has secured a ditch contract. John Zeimetz was down from Custer last week and has leased the Nevada House at that place.
Dr. Cleade Forgson, Blackfoot dentist, will visit Challis on April 17 for first class dental work. Mentioned alongside local notes including a Salmon City visit by Mrs. David Laing and county office nominating deadlines.
Notice reports Col. McFadden winning a district case and cites a 2 pm hearing in Hailey regarding completion of Salmon River diversion works for 2 cubic feet per second. It lists permit 2797 to A L Small and describes land, usage, and completion date May 11 1910, plus local commentary on a Mackay railroad headline and public notices.
Arch Howell and his son arrived from Boise on a business trip and will return this week. Mrs. J. H. Thompson of Clayton is in Challis for a toe amputation performed by Dr. Kirtley. A social raised 61 dollars for cemetery improvements and a following dance netted 215 dollars. Dan Murphy traveled from Lemhi to Stanley to work placers, amid an early Basin mining push at Joe's Gulch. W Kessenger of Mackay promotes Studebaker wagons in Challis April 18 to 21, with harnesses. Mr. Brown connected to the Treadwell mill plans a Washington Basin visit to inspect mines, then return in about five weeks.
E W Mooney proprietor of the former Office saloon was stabbed at 2 30 am by James Bradley with a pocket knife in a dispute over money. Wound to the abdomen not fatal. Dr Wright reports patient improving. Bradley and accomplice Ed Camp were arrested and to be held for trial.
Challis readers learn of BigReservoir G and P Cope attorney Davis visiting to push funding for a Challis creek dam and 15000 acres of reclaimed land. Joe Hill plans spring work, a dam power plant, and a Cadillac shuttle to the site. Rail prospects from Salmon City loom, with surveying near complete and grade under 1 percent, promising future town expansion and new jobs.
The dam at the mouth of Yankee Fork on Salmon River is completed, standing about 25 feet high and 35 feet wide at the base. Built of concrete, the project faced extreme cold and long periods without good weather, with supply freighting over 100 miles from the railroad. Once in operation, Sunbeam mills and mines will run with lower costs and year round power.
Up to last Saturday five steel bridge bidders filed sealed bids for the Big Lost River wagon bridge project near Darlington. Names include Minneapolis Steel Bridge & Machinery Co of Minneapolis C G Sheeley Bridge Co of Pocatello Midland Bridge Co of Kansas City J J Burke Co of Galt Lake City and J H Forbes of Caldwell Idaho. Competition noted.
